WHERE THE LIGHT COMES FROM
Our lamps own a bit of exuberant calm, like the Atlantic forest surrounding us; of the quietness of the river which crosses our valley filled with stories, time and inhabitants; of the chiaroscuro produced by the lights and shadows which reflect over the horizon; of flowers, like the ones flecking the paths which have brought us to where we are today.
Some time ago we were advised to go away from Vedra, from Galicia. They told us we were too far away from logistic and trade centres. Too much periphery. They didn’t understand that if arturo alvarez’s lamps are the way they are, it is just because they are born in this place. They are unique because they resemble this distinctive landscape, this culture, this life. If they are special it is because they have their own philosophy, closely attached to the surroundings where they are created.
Our atelier has always been here, surrounded by trees, covered in ivy. You can feel nature everywhere, also indoors, thanks to the large windows that allow us to gaze at the landscape of the valley, to contemplate the narrow road to the river, the cultivated fields and the animals, and a beautiful green vegetation.
From our environment we have learnt that character, originality and personality are shaped with the hands. This way of working, meticulous and with a strong focus on detail, has been part of the essence of Arturo Alvarez since our beginnings. We have not invented anything, our people have always worked this way. We have learnt from each of the traditional handicrafts surrounding us, from pottery to basket making, from carpentry to day-to-day work in the countryside.
A source of inspiration
Growing up in this environment has revealed us the secrets of handicraft, while nature has given us inspiration. The trees, flowers and animals are transformed into textures, volumes and materials which are the basis of our lamps. For Arturo Álvarez, it has always been like this. As a child he observed the landscape and played with the objects around him. Still today, his home and studio are full of branches, seeds, leaves and stones. It is here, in this game of experimentation and decontextualization of quotidian and natural elements, where light is generated.
This influence of the environment is obvious in our collections. With its slender feminine silhouette, Gea represents the origin: mother earth. Muu takes its shapes from the animals which the countrymen used to work with, while the proximity of the sea is expressed in an evocative way in the organic volumes of Coral.
The hand-moulded curves of Nevo lamps evoke the forms of nature: the wind, the clouds, the flowers… and Aros collection is a clear example of how artisan techniques –in this case basketwork– are applied to decontextualized materials –polypropylene strips. Blum and Caos represent the chaotic and at the same time harmonious order of nature, and Tempo means a reflection on the rhythm of life.
Our bet on local development
It is impossible to return to our environment everything it gives us, but we try, with our activity, to contribute to its development. As part of our commitment with our surroundings we work to implement new technologies which contribute to energy saving and to a more sustainable production, and we also incorporate recycled materials to our catalogue.
Most people from our team are also neighbours, and together we make our lamps, by hand and with the greatest care. It is our way of working. We believe in things well done, in objects with a soul. We think that the excessive consumption of disposable goods, that seem to be the general practice nowadays, only leads to standardization and loss of value of the products.
Obviously, Vedra is far away from the places where trends are generated. We don’t care, because our experience has shown us that beauty is not perishable, and it is here, hidden in the landscape, waiting to be found. After more than 20 years of professional experience we have learnt that creativity is free and we can reach it through experimentation.
The emotion shining from our lamps is born out of this little green corner in the northwest of Spain. It comes from the light traveling through the valley, filtering among the leaves of the trees, mirroring in the water of the river. Now it is the shadow, then the brightness. A game of lights that stream through the window of our atelier, and then travel the world transformed into luminaires that keep inside a piece of our small universe. For this reason, they are unique, for this reason, they are our lamps.
